The students learned about Stamford’s Police, Fire, Health, EMS, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications, Social Services departments, and the Community Emergency Response Team. The Public Safety Academy was a unique program and the first of its kind in Stamford.
“As graduates of the Citizen’s Public Safety Academy, these individuals now have a better understanding of what goes into making Stamford a safe and healthy city,” Mayor David Martin said. “Graduates should be proud of what they have accomplished and we are thankful for their dedication to making Stamford a safer place.”
Participants received an overview of what each agency’s responsibility is and how they respond in emergency situations. Participants were taught to assess safety issues and share their knowledge of public safety practices and policies with others.
The graduates from this academy class are also now qualified to become members of the City of Stamford’s Community Emergency Response Team (“CERT”), a highly motivated and dedicated volunteer citizen organization.
Some Citizens Public Safety Academy students shared their experiences with the audience.
Jeverra Hennessy told people about her ride along with the Stamford Police Department. “I got a glimpse of what our police officers do, and I am impressed and really admire them for their service,'' she said.
Robert Giordano shared his experience being up close with the Chief and firefighters of the Stamford Fire Department. Upon arriving at the fire station, he was given the grand tour of the trucks, equipment and the station, and could appreciate the very difficult and dangerous job that firefighters have.
Steven J. Ordonez rode with Stamford Emergency Medical Services and said he learned a lot about the profession and the lifesaving equipment used, and saw how dedicated the emergency medical technicians and paramedics are in providing the best medical care possible.

- Law Enforcement overview and Community Policing
- F trips to Public Safety agency facilities with guided tours
- Terrorism awareness and evacuation procedures
- K-9 demonstration
- The use of force continuum and incident de-escalation procedures
- Ambulance life support services and disaster medical operations
- Firefighting overview and techniques
- Incident command, basic emergency awareness and CERT duties and responsibilities
- Health, emergency management and emergency communications
- Bomb Squad response and duties
- and current narcotics trends and enforcement.
